Behavior
We use a lot of positive reinforcement of desired behavior in our classroom. I point out students on a regular basis who are honoring the speaker, using kind words and following directions the first time. I also use a whole class “Rock Jar” that when filled they will get a “Fun Friday,” as a reward.
If a child needs two warnings we then may direct them to a Thinking Chair. You can help us reinforce this behavior by expecting your child to listen to you and follow your directions at home right away.
One of the best things I love about DMCS is that all classrooms have the same expectations and consequences.
Classroom Expectations:
1. Follow Directions the First Time
2. Use Kind Words
3. Honor the Speaker
4. Hands, Feet and Objects to Yourself
5. Use Materials Correctly
Classroom Consequences
Birthday Celebrations
Because this is a TK class, all students have fall and winter Birthdays. You are welcome to send your child with a favorite healthy snack/cupcakes on their Birthday. You may also send them with a favorite book from home for me to read to the class. Because of allergies, please let me know 24 hours in advance if you are bringing a special treat to school for your child’s Birthday..
Snack
Thank you parents who have already provided our healthy snack this year. Because we have a student with severe allergies, please only send snacks on the approved list. Also, if you would like to send a reusable water bottle with your child each day, they can use it during snack time. This will cut down on the dish washing we do every day!
Curriculum
Handwriting Without Tears, First Language Lessons, Box it or Bag it Math, Zoo-Phonics, Lakeshore Science Boxes.
Classroom Jobs
Every day students have a chance to take care of our classroom in various ways. There are snack helpers, table washers, dusters, water our many plants, floor monitors, calendar helper and line leaders each day. These jobs are switched every day and I keep track of who has done what so that everyone gets an equal chance at all of the jobs.
Volunteering
All volunteers must be cleared by having a current negative tuberculin (TB) skin test. Volunteers may earn volunteer hours both in and out of the classroom. Please let me know if you are interested in volunteering and for what types of activities. Thank you parents who have already expressed interest in helping in our classroom. We have the fabulous Ms. Jenna until 11:15 everyday so our ratio is really quite wonderful! The ways you can help are to replenish our playdough supply every month, wash our Montessori rugs/mats as well as our dishtowels. As the school year goes on I may add more volunteer jobs so be on the lookout in my parent letter!
Homework
The best gift you can give to your child is reading to them. My favorite time of the day when my kids were younger was reading to them. As they got older I loved reading the Classics aloud to them. Don’t be afraid to read aloud great chapter books with them as well as picture books! That is your child’s homework assignment every day, read to them! It is also so important you talk with your child, ask them questions and engage them in conversation every day.

Shutterfly
- I would love to set up a private Shutterfly website just for our class. I will wait to hear from parents before I set it up. We do so many photo worthy activities in our classroom and I would love to share them with you! If a parent wants to take on this job for volunteer hours I would be more than happy to pass it along!
